The i newspaper reports on the UK becoming the first country in the world to authorise a new Covid vaccine targeted at both the original Covid virus and the newer Omicron variant. The paper notes the vaccine approval comes after concerns a “damaging Covid wave” could hit in the autumn, delaying NHS efforts to cut waiting times and tackle the backlog caused by lockdowns.
The Times Scotland also leads with the new Moderna vaccine and reports all over-50s are likely to be offered the jab as a part of a booster campaign due to begin within a month. The paper says it equates to half the population now being urged to have a fourth vaccination. It reports that health chiefs see another round of Covid jabs as crucial to minimising pressure on the NHS.
The Scottish Sun leads with the same story and reports the defender was arrested in Glasgow city centre hours after Celtic’s 5-0 win over Kilmarnock.
Conservative leadership frontrunner Liz Truss has vowed to go “toe to toe” with Nicola Sturgeon, reports the Scottish Daily Mail. Ms Truss accused Ms Sturgeon of using “divisive sabre-rattling” about another independence referendum to distract from failings on education, drug deaths and ferries.
The Scottish Daily Express says Ms Truss has revealed plans to turbocharge the Scottish economy and called plans for a second independence referendum the wrong priority for Scotland.
The Scotsman says the SNP has warned any attempt to change the devolution settlement will be resisted, as Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak both pledged greater scrutiny of the Scottish government if they become the next prime minister.
The National says a new poll suggests around a quarter of Scots will be more likely to vote Yes with either Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss as prime minister. The paper’s headline describes the Conservative leadership contest as a “Win-Win for Yes!”
The Daily Telegraph writes that the Royal Navy is planning to relinquish its role in charge of dealing with migrants crossing illegally to the UK on 31 January next year. It comes four months after Boris Johnson brought in the first Navy vessels to patrol the Channel. The paper reports government sources say the Royal Navy is planning to hand back control to the Border Force.
Millions of pounds earmarked for NHS dental care in Scotland went unspent last year despite huge treatment backlogs, reports The Herald. The paper says figures obtained under freedom of information by the Scottish Dental Association show that £343m was spent by the Scottish government on General Dental Services in 2022/23, out of a total dental budget of £431m.
The Metro leads with the opening day of the fatal accident inquiry into a blaze which killed two men at Cameron House Hotel in 2017. The fire claimed the lives of Simon Midgley, 32, and Richard Dyson who were on a winter break at the hotel in West Dunbartonshire. Mr Midgley’s mother Jane, told the inquiry how she is “tortured” by the thought of her son being trapped.
Two bikers and a driver have been accused of killing a mum “during a race”, according to Edinburgh Evening News. The paper says Ashley Sadler, 40, Ian McLaughlan, 41, and Daniel De Monerri, 37, are accused of being involved in a five-vehicle crash on the A7066 in Bathgate, West Lothian, on 6 July 2020. Fiona Reid, 38, later died in hospital after her car was struck.
The Daily Star of Scotland says a jury has heard Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy is a “predator” who “turned the pursuit of women for sex into a game”. The 28-year-old is accused of eight counts of rape, one of attempted rape and one of sexual assault. Opening the case, Timothy Cray QC said it had “very little to do with football” and more about men who “think they are powerful”.
A cyclist who chased a 14-year-old girl and sexually assaulted her at a Moray beauty spot has been warned he will go to prison if he doesn’t get help for his predatory impulses, reports The Press and Journal. The paper says Benjamin Mearns, 40, attacked the teenager near the River Spey at Fochabers.
A Chef threatened to cut his sister’s face before grabbing her and throwing her to the ground, reports the Glasgow Times. The paper says Paul Fay, 33, texted his sibling in May last year.
An international Barley Hub is expected to create 470 jobs in Tayside and a further 2,200 jobs across the wider Scottish economy, says The Courier. The paper reports the plant growth centre at the James Hutton Institute aim to help develop new varieties of the crop and growing systems able to cope with climate change, as well as finding new uses for barley, and help secure the long-term future of the barley sector.
The Evening Express says Aberdeen’s gothic Slains Castle bar could lose its distinctive decor under plans to turn it into a Slug and Lettuce branch.
