Many of the papers lead with the onstage stabbing in New York of author Sir Salman Rushdie, who since a 1989 fatwa issued by the then-Iranian leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, has been subject to death threats over his novel The Satanic Verses. The Daily Mirror reports that the 75-year-old was stabbed several times by a “heavy-set attacker” and that a suspect was in custody on Friday night.
