which advises the UK governments on vaccines &#8211; has said that 12 to 15-year-olds should be offered a second jab &#8211; to be given at least 12 weeks after the first.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">It&#8217;s one of of a number of measures the JCVI say should be carried out, in case the Omicron variant spreads more easily or is more severe than current types of Covid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Children aged 16 and 17 are already being offered a second dose.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">England and Scotland have already said they will act on the JCVI&#8217;s advice, and it is likely to be accepted in Wales and Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"Is-the-vaccine-compulsory\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">Is the vaccine compulsory?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">He said young people and their parents needed to be supported, and there should be no stigma attached to their choice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">A four-week gap applies to children who are deemed at higher risk because of underlying health conditions, or because they live with vulnerable adults.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"Do-parents-have-to-give-permission\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">Do parents have to give permission?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Although parental consent is being sought, children under 16 who can prove they understand the risks and benefits can ask for the vaccine &#8211; or refuse it &#8211; if they disagree with their parents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">This important legal test of whether a child can consent to treatment is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/consent-to-treatment\/children\/\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">&#8220;Gillick competence&#8221;.<\/a> It is named after a famous dispute in which a teenager wanted contraceptive advice without her mother&#8217;s consent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">In practice, it would be extremely unusual for a child under 13 to be judged Gillick-competent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Teenagers aged 16 and 17 don&#8217;t need parental permission, unless there are exceptional circumstances. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"How-do-you-get-vaccinated\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">How do you get vaccinated?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"unordered-list-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i86\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5f7ft-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>In <b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Scotland<\/b>, 12 to 15-year-olds are being invited to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/covid-19-vaccine\/the-vaccines\/vaccinating-children-and-young-people-aged-12-to-17-years\/\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">make an appointment or get vaccinated at drop-in centres.<\/a> Over-16s can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/vaccineregistration\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">register for their first or second vaccine online,<\/a> or by calling 0800 030 8013, or can go to drop-in vaccination clinics<\/li>\n<li>In <b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">England, <\/b>12 to 15-year-olds can have their jab at school, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/coronavirus-covid-19\/coronavirus-vaccination\/book-coronavirus-vaccination\/\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">book an appointment at a vaccination centre,<\/a> some of which also offer a drop-in service. Over-16s can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/coronavirus-covid-19\/\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">book their first or second jabs online,<\/a> by calling 119, or can visit a walk-in clinic<\/li>\n<li>In <b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Wales<\/b>, vaccination centres are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-58625008\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">also being used<\/a> for teenagers<\/li>\n<li>In <b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Northern Ireland<\/b>, jabs for 12 to 15-year-olds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealth.hscni.net\/covid-19-coronavirus\/northern-ireland-covid-19-vaccination-programme\/schools-vaccination-programme\" class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">are expected to roll out through schools<\/a> during November.
