I know there are many players who complain, and many of them are top 10.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">The US Open is the only major where men and women use different balls and, in the build-up to this year&#8217;s tournament, a number of players have echoed Swiatek&#8217;s comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-6.0\">There has also been a mixed response to the decision to allow in-play coaching at the tournament for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-8\">What difference do the balls make?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">The women use Wilson US Open regular duty balls in New York, while the men use Wilson US Open extra duty balls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.0\">The regular duty balls are thinner and lighter than the extra duty ones. Wilson states that the regular balls are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilson.com\/en-us\/blog\/tennis\/how-tos\/how-choose-tennis-ball\" class=\"story-body__external-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.0\">likely to fluff up more<\/span><span class=\"gs-u-ml- gel-icon\" style=\"height:15px;width:15px;\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.1\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.1.0\"><title data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.1.0.0\">external-link<\/title><path d=\"M12 0v5h11.5l-5 5H0v22h22V17.5l-2 2V30H2V12h14.5l-7.8 7.7 3.6 3.6L27 8.5V20h5V0H12z\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.$link-2.1.0.1\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-10.3\">, meaning they play faster but are &#8220;less durable&#8221; than the extra duty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">Wilson also says that the regular duty balls are developed for softer surfaces, like clay or indoor courts, compared to the extra duty ones, which are for hard courts and &#8220;abrasive&#8221; surfaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">Swiatek explained that the lighter balls can contribute to more unforced errors which, in turn, can make matches more unappealing to watch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">&#8220;Especially after three games of really hard playing, they are getting more and more light,&#8221; she said at the Cincinnati Open last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">&#8220;At the end, you can&#8217;t even serve at 170kmh [105mph] because you know it&#8217;s going to fly like crazy. They are pretty bad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">&#8220;Right now we play powerful, and we kind of can&#8217;t loosen up our hands with these balls. Should be the same extra duty ball for men and women. She is 100% right in my opinion.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">French Open runner-up <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.$bold-1\">Coco Gauff <\/strong><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.2\">said she could &#8220;definitely tell there&#8217;s a difference&#8221; when it came to using the US Open balls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">Meanwhile, American number one <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.$bold-1\">Jessica Pegula<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.2\">, who is part of the Women&#8217;s Tennis Association&#8217;s player council, said she was &#8220;personally not a huge fan&#8221; of the balls. She told The Guardian: &#8220;I feel like the first couple weeks there are a lot of double faults, because the balls are just kind of flying a bit more. I don&#8217;t see why we couldn&#8217;t switch to extra duty. But it&#8217;s easier said than done, so hopefully the player council can work on that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">However, players such as <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.$bold-1\">Petra Kvitova <\/strong><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.2\">and <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.$bold-3\">Madison Keys<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.4\">, who tend to hit hard, flat strikes that will gather more pace off a lighter ball, have said they like the regular duty ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">Wimbledon runner-up <\/span><strong data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.$bold-1\">Ons Jabeur<\/strong><span data-reactid=\".29uhdcnlfgs.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.2\">, known for her crafty ball striking, said she will &#8220;play with any ball&#8221; but added: &#8220;It would make sense if we played with the same balls as men, because that&#8217;s what we do in other Grand Slams.
