{"id":42891,"date":"2023-06-27T06:48:24","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T06:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fusefornews.com\/2023\/06\/27\/equity-in-cricket-report-discrimination-widespread-in-english-cricket\/"},"modified":"2023-06-27T06:48:24","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T06:48:24","slug":"equity-in-cricket-report-discrimination-widespread-in-english-cricket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fusefornews.com\/?p=42891","title":{"rendered":"Equity in Cricket report: Discrimination &#8216;widespread&#8217; in English cricket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1\">\n<figure class=\"gs-u-mt0 gs-u-mb-alt+ story-body__media story-body__media--figure qa-story-body-media story-body__media--lead\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$image-0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block story-body__media\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0\"><span class=\"gs-u-display-block gs-o-responsive-image\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/12D5\/production\/_130212840_lord'scricket.jpg\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 800px, (min-width: 900px) 624px, (min-width: 600px) 976px, (min-width: 400px) 624px, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/400\/cpsprodpb\/12D5\/production\/_130212840_lord'scricket.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/624\/cpsprodpb\/12D5\/production\/_130212840_lord'scricket.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/800\/cpsprodpb\/12D5\/production\/_130212840_lord'scricket.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/onesport\/cps\/976\/cpsprodpb\/12D5\/production\/_130212840_lord'scricket.jpg 976w\" alt=\"A general view of play at Lord's Cricket Ground\" class=\"qa-srcset-image\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$image-0.0.0.0\"\/><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"gel-brevier gs-u-ph+ gs-u-pv-alt story-body__media__caption story-body__media__caption--image\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$image-0.1\">The Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket received more than 4,000 responses to its call for evidence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p role=\"introduction\" class=\"qa-introduction gel-pica-bold\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-1.0\">Racism, sexism, classism and elitism are &#8220;widespread&#8221; in English and Welsh cricket, according to a long-awaited independent report.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2\">\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-2.0.0\">The Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) has delivered its findings from a two-year investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3.0\">The ICEC has made 44 recommendations, including that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) make an unreserved public apology for its failings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-4.0\">ECB chair Richard Thompson said: &#8220;We will use this moment to reset cricket.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-5.0\">The ICEC was announced by the ECB in March 2021 in the wake of global movements such as Black Lives Matter and Me Too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-7.0\">It opened an online call for evidence in November of that year, receiving 4,156 responses. In March 2022, a call for written evidence resulted in more than 150 responses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.0\">Among those to give evidence include England men&#8217;s Test captain Ben Stokes, women&#8217;s captain Heather Knight, former men&#8217;s captain Joe Root, World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/cricket\/65139617\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.$link-2.0\">Azeem Rafiq,<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-8.3\"> the former Yorkshire player and racism whistleblower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-9.0\">In a damning 317-page report called Holding Up A Mirror To Cricket, the ICEC concluded that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10\">\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-0\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-0.0\">&#8220;Structural and institutional racism&#8221; continues to exist within the game<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-1\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-1.0\">Women are treated as &#8220;subordinate&#8221; to men at all levels of the sport<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-2\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-2.0\">There is a prevalence of &#8220;elitism and class-based discrimination&#8221; in cricket<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-3\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-3.0\">Black cricket has been failed and the ECB must develop a plan to revive it<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-4\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-4.0\">Many who experience discrimination do not report it because of a distrust in the authorities<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-5\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$list-10.$list-item-5.0\">Umpires regularly ignore abuse and dismiss complaints in both the professional and recreational game<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-11.0\">&#8220;There remains a stark reality that cricket is not a &#8216;game for everyone&#8217; and it is absolutely essential that the work required to achieve that ambition must begin immediately,&#8221; wrote ICEC chair Cindy Butts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-12.0\">&#8220;Be in no doubt, what is needed now is leadership. I very much hope that the recommendations we make in this report will be adopted and driven forward by the ECB and all others in leadership positions.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-13.0\">The report did praise the ECB for being &#8220;brave&#8221; enough to open itself to independent scrutiny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-14.0\">Thompson, who became ECB chair last September, offered an &#8220;unreserved&#8221; apology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-15.0\">&#8220;Cricket should be a game for everyone, and we know that this has not always been the case,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Powerful conclusions within the report also highlight that for too long women and black people were neglected. We are truly sorry for this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-16.0\">&#8220;This report makes clear that historic structures and systems have failed to prevent discrimination, and highlights the pain and exclusion this has caused. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-17.0\">&#8220;I am determined that this wake-up call for cricket in England and Wales should not be wasted. We will use this moment to demonstrate that it is a game for all and we have a duty to put this right for current and future generations.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.0\">The recommendations also include the equalisation of match fees between the England women&#8217;s and men&#8217;s teams with immediate effect, that the ECB reports on the state of equity in cricket every three years and the removal of annual fixtures between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/cricket\/64964074\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.$link-2.0\">Eton and Harrow schools and Oxford and Cambridge universities<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-18.3\"> from Lord&#8217;s.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-19\">&#8216;Culture in cricket is rotten&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">In light of allegations made by former Yorkshire spinner Rafiq, the ECB published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/cricket\/59417260\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.$link-2.0\">plan to tackle racism<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.3\"> and all forms of discrimination in November 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-21.0\">The ICEC said the significant response it received to its call for evidence was propelled by Rafiq&#8217;s appearance at a Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee hearing in the same month, when he labelled English cricket &#8220;institutionally racist&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-22.0\">Of the respondents, 50% described experiencing discrimination during the course of the previous five years. The figures were higher for people from ethnically diverse communities: 87% of people with Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage, 82% of people with Indian heritage and 75% of all black respondents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-23.0\">&#8220;The persistence of interpersonal and structural racism in cricket is due, we believe, in part to a failure by the ECB to specifically and unambiguously name racism as a concern, at least until the recent crisis (and only then generally in reference to interpersonal and overt forms of racism),&#8221; said the report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-24.0\">&#8220;Racism remains a widespread and serious problem in cricket across England and Wales and something that the ECB and the wider game should address with urgency.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-25.0\">In its evidence to the report, the ECB admitted to a &#8220;lost generation&#8221; of black cricketers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-26.0\">&#8220;Black adults are not playing cricket in sufficient numbers to even be picked up by surveys that measure participation in cricket,&#8221; said the ICEC report. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-27.0\">&#8220;A 2020 report by Sport England found that black participation was so low as to be statistically irrelevant, apparently lower than in golf and tennis.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-28.0\">The ICEC has recommended that the ECB undertakes an &#8220;in-depth examination&#8221; of the decline in cricket among black communities within the next 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-29.0\">In a statement, Rafiq said: &#8220;I welcome the report&#8217;s findings and acknowledge the extraordinary work that has been put into this inquiry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-30.0\">&#8220;There is no doubt now that the game we all love has suffered from institutionalised discrimination, including racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-31.0\">&#8220;This report is an opportunity to fully reflect on what has happened and for the sport&#8217;s governing structures to work out a way forward to ensure that cricket is a game for everyone and that they feel supported, no matter their background.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-32\">&#8216;Culture of sexism and misogyny&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-33.0\">Though the report recognised &#8220;positive strides&#8221; made in the women&#8217;s game, it also highlighted a lack of female representation among decision-makers, less media exposure and fewer opportunities to play at premier grounds for elite women, and inequity in terms of kit and equipment available to women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-34.0\">The ICEC heard &#8220;evidence of a widespread culture of sexism and misogyny&#8221; and examples of men making unwanted and uninvited advances towards women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-35.0\">The report was alarmed that England&#8217;s women have never played a Test at Lord&#8217;s, while the &#8220;home of cricket&#8221; continues to host an annual schools fixture between Eton and Harrow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-36.0\">In terms of pay and investment, the women&#8217;s game receives an &#8220;embarrassingly small amount&#8221; when compared to the men&#8217;s game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-37.0\">According to the report, an England women&#8217;s white-ball player receives a salary that is 20.6% that of her male equivalent and the allowance given to the women&#8217;s captain is 31% that of the men&#8217;s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.0\">Domestically, the average salary of a woman in the regional structure is 45% that of a man at a first-class county, while in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/56184881\" class=\"story-body__internal-link\" title=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.$link-2\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.$link-2.0\">The Hundred<\/span><\/a><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-38.3\"> the highest salary tier for women is \u00a31,250 more than the lowest tier for men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-39.0\">Even when players are excluded, there is an 18.8% gap in the average salary between female and male employees at the ECB.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-40.0\">The ICEC has recommended a &#8220;fundamental overhaul of the professional women players&#8217; pay structure&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-41\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-41.0\">This includes immediate parity between men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s international match fees, overall equal pay at international level by 2030 and equal pay in The Hundred in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$crosshead-42\">&#8216;Elitist and exclusionary&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-43\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-43.0\">A lack of cricket in state schools and a talent pathway structurally aligned to private schools is partly to blame for &#8220;elitism and class-based discrimination&#8221;, according to the report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-44\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-44.0\">Some 58% of men to play for England in 2021 were privately educated, significantly higher than the 7% of the general population that went to private school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-45\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-45.0\">To highlight the overrepresentation of privately educated people in the game, 42% of respondents to the ICEC&#8217;s own survey went to a private school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-46\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-46.0\">The report also referenced the costs associated in participating in talent pathways and &#8220;conflicts of interests and biases&#8221; from coaches as further barriers to player progression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-47\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-47.0\">&#8220;The structure and operation of the talent pathway remains a barrier to equity and inclusion across gender, class and race,&#8221; said the report. &#8220;It repeats and reinforces wider structural inequalities that exist across cricket in England and Wales.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-48\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-48.0\">The ICEC recommends that inter-county cricket should not begin before the age of 14 and all access to a county talent pathway programme should be free of charge by 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-49\"><span data-reactid=\".14zaabhrb2m.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-49.0\">&#8220;We recommend that the entire talent pathway structure should be overhauled to make it more meritocratic, inclusive, accountable, transparent and consistent,&#8221;
